Ford falcon GTHO rounds a corner at Leyburn Historic Sprints

THE Historic Leyburn Sprints return to the Southern Darling Downs on 21-22 August for a unique festival of grassroots motorsport and motoring fun.

After a Covid-forced cancellation last year, the Sprints are back for a 25th time with more than 200 historic, classic and performance cars on track, a glittering collection in the Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine and a paddock full of colourful vintage caravans.

Celebrating Leyburn’s hosting of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix, the Sprints time trials run on a 1.0 kilometre closed-street course around the town. They feature a mouth-watering array of racing, sports and touring cars dating from the 1920s to modern-day competing in more than 50 classes – but there are plenty of other attractions too.

Meet the Leyburn Legends, a special invited group of famous motorsport champions from past decades including Dick Johnson, John Bowe, Colin Bond and Fred Gibson, top racing mechanics and more.

There are more car displays, country markets, food stalls, bars and live music at the 1863 Royal Hotel. Enter the daily draw to win a racing car ride.

The Historic Leyburn Sprints is a great weekend packed with fun for all the family and wonderful country hospitality. Proceeds from the community-run event benefit local organisations and projects.

Tickets at the gate, adult Saturday or Sunday $20, weekend $30, children under 14 Free. Competition starts at 8am both days.

Leyburn is around 60 kms north-west of Warwick and 220 kms from Brisbane.
