LEYBURN (Queensland) - John Bowe, one of Australia’s most decorated motor-racing champions, will attend the Historic Leyburn Sprints for the first time at its 25th anniversary celebrations next month.

Bowe, recently awarded the Order of Australia medal for his lifetime’s service to motorsport, will be among a select group of drivers known as the Leyburn Legends invited on 21-22 August to celebrate the Sprints’ quarter-century and the Darling Downs township’s hosting of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix.

Still an active and winning competitor after 50 years at the wheel, the Tasmanian-born ace will join former rivals from the 70s and 80s including Dick Johnson, Colin Bond and Fred Gibson, plus other stars still to be announced.

The Leyburn Legends are set to be among the highlights of a packed weekend of grassroots motorsport competition featuring more than 200 historic, classic and performance cars racing the clock on a 1.0 kilometre closed-street course.

LEYBURN (Queensland) - The classic four-wheeled stars of the Historic Leyburn Sprints will hit the track with some extra sparkle this year thanks to a new dash of polish from Australian car care company Bowden’s Own.

Bowden’s Own will be a major product sponsor for the 25th anniversary Sprints on 21-22 August, supplying samples and prizes from its range of around 70 Queensland-designed and made products.

Sprints organising committee President Tricia Chant welcomed Bowden’s Own as the event’s newest partner.

“The Historic Leyburn Sprints is all about beautiful classic vehicles on the track and in the Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine and Vintage caravan displays, so it’s perfect that we’ve joined forces with the most respected name in Australian car care products,” Mrs Chant said.

LEYBURN (Queensland) - Some of the most popular personalities of Australia’s motor-racing past will be honoured at the Leyburn Legends Weekend during 25th anniversary celebrations for the Historic Leyburn Sprints in August.

The Sprints will return to the rural township on the Queensland Southern Darling Downs on 21-22 August after the 2020 event was cancelled because of Covid-19. It will be the 25th event since the Sprints were launched to commemorate the 1949 Australian Grand Prix at Leyburn.

The Legends were a big attraction in their first appearance in Leyburn in 2019 and Sprints President Tricia Chant said the organisers were keen to invite them back.

LEYBURN (Queensland) - One of Australia’s most popular grass-roots motorsport events, the Historic Leyburn Sprints, has begun planning for its 25th anniversary next August after a Covid-enforced layoff this year.

The round-the-houses Sprints on Queensland’s southern Darling Downs will be staged on 21-22 August, celebrating the 25th running since its founding in 1996 and 72 years since the little bush town hosted the 1949 Australian Grand Prix.

A Legends Dinner featuring many Australian motorsport stars of the 60s, 70s and 80s will be the highlight of a packed weekend expected to attract around 15,000 spectators and more than 200 historic and classic racing cars.

LEYBURN (Queensland) - This year’s Historic Leyburn Sprints for historic and classic cars, which were scheduled to run on 22-23 August, have been cancelled and 25th anniversary celebrations of the event deferred to next year.

The local community-run organising committee announced the decision today, saying it could not guarantee that the original date or a possible postponed date later this year would be able to run viably within Covid-19 restrictions.

The committee said it was also keenly aware that large crowds at this time could potentially bring the virus to the small Leyburn community of around 350, which until now has remained Covid-19 free.
