SPRINTS WIN FRESH FUNDING FOR TOURISM PROMOTION

THE Historic Leyburn Sprints has been awarded fresh funding of $20,000 under the Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) Queensland Destination Events Program (QDEP).

The funding, which continues TEQ’s support after the previous three-year support package, will be used to help grow the event through increased marketing.

The 22nd Historic Leyburn Sprints will be on 19-20 August next year.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said $535,000 had been awarded to 21 events, including Leyburn.

“Events play a key role in growing Queensland’s tourism economy, increasing overnight visitation, driving visitors to the state and offering them an extraordinary and uniquely Queensland experience,” Ms Jones said.

She said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to event development that directly benefited Queensland’s regional communities.

“We are committed to investing in Queensland events which drive visitation, grow tourism and support tourism jobs.”

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) CEO Leanne Coddington said: “Events are a great excuse for people to get out and experience Queensland, and a valuable tool to encourage dispersal throughout our unique destinations.”

Funding for the Sprints will help attract more competitors and spectators from outside the Southern Down region.

Many local community groups help run the not-for-profit event and raise funds for their own activities.
